A Word file can look different on every computer that opens it. A missing font, another version of the software or different printer settings is enough to move a page break or push a table onto the next page. A PDF fixes the layout in place, which is why CVs, invoices, contracts, cover letters and coursework are usually sent as PDFs. The S-PDF Word to PDF converter turns your document into one without needing Microsoft Office on your device.

It accepts DOC and DOCX files from Microsoft Word, ODT files from LibreOffice and OpenOffice, RTF and plain TXT. The conversion runs on our server with LibreOffice, so it works the same from a Chromebook, a phone or a desktop computer, and you can convert several documents in one go.

How to convert Word to PDF

  1. Upload your documents Drag DOC, DOCX, ODT, RTF or TXT files onto the upload box, or select them from your device. The free plan takes up to 10 files per task.
  2. Convert Start the conversion. Each document is opened by LibreOffice on our server and exported as a PDF, page for page.
  3. Download your PDFs Download the PDF straight away. If you converted several documents, they arrive together as one ZIP, and each PDF can also be downloaded individually.

Why use S-PDF for Word to PDF

  • Five document formatsConvert DOC, DOCX, ODT, RTF and TXT files without Microsoft Word installed.
  • Line breaks that matchMetric-compatible fonts stand in for Calibri, Cambria, Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New, so text wraps where it did in Word.
  • Macros never runMacros are never executed and remote content linked from the document is not fetched.
  • Batch conversionConvert several documents in one task and download them as a ZIP or one at a time.
  • Works anywhereRuns in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, iPhone, iPad and Android.
  • Private by designDocuments travel over HTTPS and are deleted automatically one hour after your last action.

How fonts are handled

Fonts such as Calibri and Cambria are licensed by Microsoft for Windows and Office, so the converter uses open fonts that are metric-compatible instead: every character takes up exactly the same width as in the original font.

CambriaCaladea
ArialLiberation Sans
Times New RomanLiberation Serif
Courier NewLiberation Mono

The letter shapes differ slightly from the originals, but each line holds the same words, so line breaks and page breaks land where they do in Word. Uncommon fonts and custom brand typefaces are a different story: they are swapped for a similar font that is available, and spacing can change. If your document depends on a specific brand font, the safest route is to export it from Word itself with File → Save As and PDF as the format, which uses the fonts installed on your own computer.

Security limits worth knowing

  • Macros never run. Documents can contain macros, small programs that may be harmful. They are ignored completely during conversion.
  • Remote content is not fetched. If a document points to images or other content on the internet instead of storing them inside the file, those are not downloaded. That stops a file from signalling to an outside server when it is opened, a trick sometimes used to track readers. Insert pictures from your device rather than by web link if you want them in the PDF.
  • Password-protected files can't be converted. Open the document in Word, remove the password (on Windows: File → Info → Protect Document → Encrypt with Password, then clear the box), save, and upload it again.

Tips for a clean PDF

  • Finalise the document first. Accept or reject tracked changes and delete comments you don't want anyone to see, so the PDF reflects the final version.
  • Check before you send. Open the PDF and scroll through tables, images and headers, especially if the document uses unusual fonts.
  • Several documents, one file. Convert them together, then merge the PDFs into a single application pack or report.
  • Too big for an upload form? Documents full of photos can produce large PDFs; Compress PDF shrinks them.
  • Keep the original. A PDF is for sharing, not editing. Keep the Word file for future changes, and if you only have the PDF, PDF to Word converts it back.

Frequently asked questions

Is Word to PDF conversion free?

Yes. You can convert up to 10 files and 50 MB per task, 5 times a day, with no signup and no watermark. Pro ($5 a month or $50 a year) allows 50 files and 500 MB per task, unlimited tasks under fair use, and no ads.

Do I need Microsoft Word to convert a document to PDF?

No. The conversion runs on our server with LibreOffice, so all you need is a web browser on a computer, tablet or phone.

Will my PDF look exactly like my Word document?

For documents set in common fonts such as Calibri, Cambria, Arial, Times New Roman or Courier New, line and page breaks match because metric-compatible replacement fonts are used. Custom fonts are substituted, so check the PDF before you send it.

Why does the font look slightly different?

Microsoft fonts are replaced with open fonts that have identical character widths, such as Carlito for Calibri. The letter shapes differ a little, but spacing and line breaks stay the same. For brand fonts, save as PDF from Word itself.

Can I convert a password-protected Word file?

No. Remove the password in Word first, save the document, and then upload it again.

Can I convert several documents at once?

Yes. Add up to 10 files on the free plan or 50 with Pro. The PDFs are delivered as one ZIP, and each can also be downloaded individually.

Are macros run or remote images loaded during conversion?

No. Macros never run, and images or other content the document links to on the internet are not fetched during conversion.

Are my documents kept private?

Files are sent over HTTPS, stored in a private folder that is not reachable from the web, never shared or reused, and deleted automatically one hour after your last action. The Delete my files now button removes them immediately.
