How to edit a PDF online for free (no sign-up, no watermark)

To edit a PDF online for free, open S-PDF's Edit PDF tool in any browser, add your text, images, shapes or whiteout, then click Save PDF and download the file, with no sign-up, no watermark and nothing to pay. To change the words already in the PDF, use the free PDF Studio, where you click a line and retype it in a matching font.

What you can edit in a PDF, and which free tool to use

A PDF is built to look the same everywhere, not to be rewritten. It records where each character and image sits on the page, but not how the lines flow into paragraphs. That's why you can't click into a sentence and keep typing as in Word, and why most online PDF editors only add things on top. S-PDF has a tool for each kind of edit:

PDF Studio does most of these jobs in one workspace, with undo, and accepts several PDFs and images at once. Edit PDF is quicker for adding something to one file.

How to edit a PDF online for free, step by step

Here's the whole process in Edit PDF. No step asks you to create an account.

  1. Open the tool. Go to Edit PDF in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, a Chromebook, an iPhone, iPad or Android device. There's nothing to install.
  2. Choose your PDF. Drag it onto the upload box or select it from your device: one PDF per task, up to 50 MB and 3,000 pages. The pages appear in a scrolling column, and you can zoom in for precise placement.
  3. Pick a tool. Choose Text, Image, Box, Ellipse, Line, Arrow, Draw or Whiteout, then click or drag on the page.
  4. Adjust until it fits. With Select, drag an item to move it and pull its corner handle to resize it. Double-click a text box to retype it. Set the font, size and colour for text, the outline and fill for shapes, and the colour and width for lines. Remove an item with its × or the Delete key.
  5. Save. Click Save PDF. Your additions are merged into the pages, and the file name ends in _edited.pdf.
  6. Download. You can have the file emailed to you (Send to my email), or choose Skip email and download manually and download it straight away. The email is optional, and nothing is charged.

Edit PDF has no undo button, so check each item as you place it. If you spot a mistake after saving, click Back to options: you return to the editor with your additions still editable, fix them and save again.

Is it really free? What's the catch?

Plenty of "free" PDF editors turn out not to be. Every tool on S-PDF is free, and for Edit PDF that means:

  • No account. You can edit and download without signing up. Accounts are optional.
  • No watermark. Nothing is added to your file except your own edits. PDF Studio has an optional text watermark, which appears only if you switch it on.
  • No daily limit. Edit as many PDFs as you like. The only caps are automatic safeguards against abuse.
  • No payment at download, and no trial that turns into a subscription.

The limits that do exist apply per task: one PDF of up to 50 MB in Edit PDF, up to 10 files and 50 MB in PDF Studio, 3,000 pages per PDF and 100 OCR pages per task. For a bigger file, compress it or split it first.

How to spot a "free" editor that isn't

Test any editor with a one-page file, all the way to the downloaded result, before you spend time on the real document. Warning signs:

  • A sign-up wall that appears only when you try to download.
  • A watermark or logo on the downloaded pages.
  • A daily or hourly cap: a few free tasks, then an upgrade screen.
  • A price at the download button, shown only after you've done the work.
  • A cheap trial that becomes a monthly subscription unless you cancel it.
  • Key features locked, such as changing existing text or OCR only on a paid plan.

How to change the existing text

Edit PDF can cover existing text but not change it. For that, use PDF Studio:

  1. Add your PDF and choose Edit text.
  2. Click the line you want to change and retype it. PDF Studio detects the font, weight, size, colour and baseline, and reuses the PDF's own embedded font where it can. Otherwise it uses a font with the same letter widths, such as Carlito for Calibri or Liberation Sans for Arial.
  3. Click Export PDF. The old words are removed from the page, not just hidden, and there's no email step.

Sideways page? Straighten it with Rotate PDF first, because Edit text won't work on a page rotated inside PDF Studio.

Edit text works one line at a time and doesn't reflow paragraphs, so keep each replacement about as long as the original. To remove a line, delete all of its text. PDFs often embed only the letters a document uses, so if a letter you type is missing, PDF Studio draws it in a look-alike font and tells you. There's more in our guide to editing text in a PDF.

Editing a scanned PDF

A scan is a picture of a page, so there's no text to select. You have two options:

  • Work on top of it. Edit PDF treats a scanned page like any other: add text, a signature image or whiteout.
  • Make the text editable. In PDF Studio, run OCR (text recognition) on the page in the document's language, picked from 34, then change the recognised text with Edit text. Ticking Make scanned pages searchable (OCR) at export recognises every remaining scanned page, with up to three languages for a mixed-language file.

If you only need a searchable copy, the standalone OCR PDF tool does just that. For accuracy tips, see how to edit a scanned PDF.

Filling in a form that isn't fillable

Many forms are flat PDFs: lines and boxes, but no fields to click into. In Edit PDF:

  1. Add one text box per answer, in the font style closest to the form's.
  2. Match the size of the printed text, then zoom in and line each answer up with its box.
  3. Tick boxes with a typed "X" or a short stroke of the Draw tool.
  4. Place an image of your signature with the Image tool, or open the saved file in Sign PDF.

The full walkthrough is in how to add text to a PDF.

Editing on a phone or tablet

You don't need an app. Edit PDF works in Safari on iPhone and iPad and in Chrome on Android, with the same tools as on a computer. Zoom in before placing text. If the document is still on paper, Scan to PDF turns photos from your phone's camera into a PDF you can then edit. For the built-in apps and device-specific tips, see editing a PDF on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows.

Tips for a clean result

  • Keep the original. Saving flattens your additions into the page, so they look the same in every viewer and printer but can't be lifted off later.
  • Whiteout hides; redaction removes. Text under whiteout can still be found by searching or copied. For anything confidential, use Redact PDF or the Redact tool in PDF Studio.
  • Mind the background. A white patch shows up on cream, grey or coloured paper. Use a Box instead, with its outline and fill set to the page colour.
  • Unlock protected files first. A password-protected (encrypted) PDF can't be edited until you remove the protection with Unlock PDF.
  • Some scripts are placed as images. Latin, Greek and Cyrillic text is saved as real text; Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and other scripts become an image that can't be searched or copied.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit a PDF online for free without signing up?

Yes. You can edit and download a PDF on S-PDF without creating an account. Edit PDF's download screen offers to email you the file; you can skip that and download it straight away.

Does S-PDF add a watermark to edited PDFs?

No. S-PDF never adds a watermark or logo; the only one you'll see is one you add yourself.

Is there a limit on how many PDFs I can edit?

There's no daily limit. Each task can be one PDF of up to 50 MB in Edit PDF, or up to 10 files and 50 MB in PDF Studio.

Can I change the existing text for free?

Yes, with Edit text in PDF Studio, which matches the font, size and colour. It changes one line at a time, so for rewriting whole paragraphs, converting to Word and back is easier.

Is it safe to edit a PDF online?

Files travel over HTTPS and are processed on S-PDF's own servers, not passed to third-party services. We don't share, sell or use your files. They're deleted automatically, and you can delete them yourself on the My files page. Details are in our privacy policy. If your employer requires documents to stay on approved systems, follow that rule.

Do I need Adobe Acrobat to edit a PDF?

No. Adding text, changing existing text, OCR, signing and redacting all work for free in your browser on S-PDF. A desktop editor makes sense if your workplace provides one, or if your documents must never leave your computer.
