You don't need a flatbed scanner or a dedicated app to turn paper into a PDF. The phone in your pocket has a perfectly good camera, and the S-PDF scan to PDF tool lets you use it directly from the browser: take a photo of each page, tidy up the order, choose how the pages should look, and download a single PDF.
Working on a computer? You don't have to email photos to yourself. Open the tool on your computer and a QR code appears. Scan it with your phone, take the pictures there, and they show up instantly in your computer's browser, where you build and download the PDF.
How to scan a document to PDF
- Open the camera On a phone, tap to take a photo with your camera in the browser, or pick existing photos from your gallery. On a computer, scan the QR code with your phone first.
- Photograph each page Shoot the pages one by one. Spotted a blurry or cut-off shot? Remove it or retake it before moving on.
- Arrange and style the pages Drag pages into the right order. Choose a colour mode (Enhanced colour, Greyscale or Black & white) and a page size (A4, US Letter or same as photo).
- Create the PDF Build the PDF and download it to your phone or computer.

Choosing a colour mode
| Mode | What it does | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Enhanced colour | Keeps colour and boosts contrast automatically | Brochures, ID cards, forms with coloured stamps or highlights |
| Greyscale | Removes colour, keeps shades of grey | Letters and documents with photos or pencil notes |
| Black & white | Adaptive threshold for pure black text on white | Typed pages, contracts, receipts — crisp text and small files |
Black & white adapts the threshold across the page, so a shadow in one corner is far less likely to turn that area black. It usually gives the smallest file and the most "scanner-like" result for text documents.
How to take a good scan with your phone
The tool doesn't detect page edges or correct perspective automatically, so the photo you take is the page you get. These habits make the difference between a scan that looks professional and one that looks like a snapshot:
- Fill the frame with the page so there's as little table or floor around it as possible.
- Shoot from directly above, holding the phone parallel to the paper, so lines stay straight and the page isn't shaped like a trapezoid.
- Use even light. Daylight near a window works well; avoid the shadow of your own hand and phone, and turn off the flash if it causes a glare spot.
- Put white paper on a dark background, like a wooden desk or dark cloth, so the page stands out clearly.
- Hold still and let the camera focus before you tap, especially in low light.
After scanning
A scan is a set of pictures, so you can't search or copy its text yet. Run it through OCR PDF to add a searchable text layer. If you scanned several documents separately, merge them into one file, and if a colour scan is too big to send, compress the PDF.
Need a precise result for archiving, such as straightened pages or automatic cropping? A dedicated scanner or a desktop scanning app will do better. For everyday paperwork, a carefully taken phone photo is usually all you need.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install an app to scan to PDF?
No. The camera opens directly in your mobile browser, such as Safari or Chrome. Nothing needs to be installed on your phone or computer.
How do I scan to PDF on my computer without a scanner?
Open this page on your computer and scan the QR code with your phone. Take photos on the phone and they appear instantly in your computer browser, where you create and download the PDF.
Can I use photos I already took?
Yes. On a phone, choose photos from your gallery instead of taking new ones, then arrange them and build the PDF.
Does it crop and straighten pages automatically?
No. There is no automatic edge detection or perspective correction, so fill the frame with the page and shoot from directly above for the best result.
Which colour mode gives the smallest file?
Black & white usually gives the smallest file and the crispest text, which makes it ideal for typed documents and receipts.
Is it free?
Yes. You can create up to 5 scans a day for free, with no signup and no watermark. Pro ($5 a month or $50 a year) removes the daily limit, raises the size limits and turns off ads.
Can I make my scanned PDF searchable?
Yes. Run the finished PDF through the OCR PDF tool to add an invisible text layer you can search and copy from.
What happens to my photos?
Photos are sent over HTTPS, stored in a private folder that isn't web-accessible, never shared or used for anything else, and deleted automatically one hour after your last action. Delete my files now removes them immediately.
