Unlocking…

Your files are processed on our own servers.

Your unlocked PDF is ready

Your files are deleted automatically 1 hour after your last action.

A "locked" PDF can mean two different things. Some files open normally but refuse to print, won't let you select text, or block filling in and editing: they carry a permissions password, also called an owner password. Others won't open at all until you type an open password (user password). The S-PDF unlock PDF tool handles both. Restrictions are removed without needing the owner password, and for a file that asks for a password to open, you type the password you already have and download a copy that opens without it.

The result is an ordinary PDF with the encryption removed, ready to print, copy from, or take into tools such as Merge PDF or Edit PDF without a password prompt in the way.

How to unlock a PDF in 3 steps

  1. Add the locked PDFs Drag one or more PDFs onto the upload box or select them from your device. Files that only restrict printing, copying or editing need nothing more.
  2. Type the open password if there is one If a PDF asks for a password before it opens, enter it in the password box. It is used only for this task and never stored.
  3. Unlock and download Run the task and download the unlocked copy. Several files arrive as one ZIP, and each can also be downloaded on its own.

Why use S-PDF for Unlock PDF

  • Lifts print, copy and edit locksPermission restrictions are removed without you having to know the owner password.
  • Opens password-protected filesEnter the open password once and get a copy that never asks for it again.
  • Clear error messagesIf the open password is wrong or missing, you are told so plainly instead of receiving a broken file.
  • AES and RC4 supportedModern AES and older RC4 encryption are both handled by qpdf, a long-established open-source PDF library.
  • Content left untouchedOnly the security is removed; pages, text, images, links and form fields stay exactly as they were.
  • Passwords never storedA password you type is used for that one task, and files are deleted one hour after your last action.

Why can restrictions be removed without the owner password? If a PDF opens without a prompt, every reader can already decrypt it; that is how the pages are displayed. The restrictions are flags that readers agree to respect, not a separate layer of protection. An open password is different: the content is really encrypted with it, and without it there is nothing readable to work with.

Forgot the open password? What we can and can't do

S-PDF does not guess, crack or recover passwords. If a PDF needs a password to open and you don't have it, the tool says so and stops. Before giving up on the file:

  • Check the email it came with. Banks, payroll services and utilities often explain the password format there, such as part of your date of birth or a customer number.
  • Ask the sender for the password, or for an unprotected copy.
  • Go back to the source. If you made the PDF, export it again from the original Word, Excel or design file.

Only unlock PDFs you are allowed to unlock

Use this tool for files you own or are authorised to use: printing your own bank or tax statements, removing a password you once set on an old document, or archiving company records without a password nobody will remember in ten years. Authors sometimes add restrictions to protect copyrighted material, and removing them doesn't change what you are allowed to do with the content. When in doubt, ask the owner.

Finished editing? Lock the file again with Protect PDF, which encrypts it with AES-256 and a password of your choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free to unlock PDF files?

Yes. You can unlock up to 10 files and 50 MB per task, 5 times a day, with no signup and no watermark. Pro ($5 a month or $50 a year) allows 50 files and 500 MB per task, unlimited tasks under fair use, and no ads.

Can I unlock a PDF without the password?

If the file opens but blocks printing, copying or editing, yes: those restrictions are removed without the owner password. If the file asks for a password to open, you need to type that password.

I forgot the password to open my PDF. Can you recover it?

No. Passwords are never cracked or recovered. Ask the sender for the password or an unprotected copy, or export the PDF again from its original file.

Is it legal to unlock a PDF?

Removing protection from a file you own or are authorised to use is normally fine. Don't use it to get around restrictions on documents you have no rights to; rules also vary between countries.

Will unlocking change my PDF?

Only the encryption and restrictions are removed. Pages, text, images, links, bookmarks and form fields are kept as they are, and image quality is not affected.

Which kinds of PDF encryption are supported?

Password-based AES and the older RC4 encryption are both supported. Files secured with digital certificates or a rights-management server work differently and cannot be unlocked here.

Are my files and passwords safe?

Files travel over HTTPS, sit in private storage that is not reachable from the web, are never shared or reused, and are deleted one hour after your last action. Passwords are used only for that task and never stored.

Can I unlock several PDFs at once?

Yes. Add up to 10 PDFs on the free plan or 50 with Pro. You get one ZIP, and each file can also be downloaded individually.
