Scanners and copiers love to put everything in one file. You feed in twenty two-page forms and get a single 40-page PDF; a client emails one file that is really five invoices glued together. To separate PDF pages back into the documents they belong to, you need to cut the file in the right places — and see where those places are.
This page opens the tool in Split every N pages mode with N = 2, which is right for double-sided forms. Change the number to fit your documents, or switch modes if your documents have different lengths.
How to separate the pages of a PDF
- Upload the combined PDF Drop the scanned or merged file on the tool. The thumbnails show where each document starts.
- Tell the tool where to cut Documents all the same length? Set the pages per part. Different lengths? Choose Extract pages, type ranges like
1-3, 4-9, 10-and pick "A PDF per range". - Download the separated files Click Split PDF and download the ZIP, or save each document on its own.
Pick the right way to separate
| Your file | Best mode |
|---|---|
| Every document is one page (receipts, tickets) | Split every page |
| Every document has the same number of pages (2-page forms, 4-page leaflets) | Split every N pages |
| Documents have different lengths (a stack of contracts) | Extract pages → A PDF per range |
| You only need some of the documents | Extract pages → One PDF |
As you change the settings, each new document is marked with a "Part" label on its first thumbnail and alternating shading, so you can confirm the cuts land on the right pages before you split.
Separating double-sided scans
When a document feeder scans both sides, each sheet becomes two pages. If every form is one sheet, N = 2 separates them perfectly. If some backs are blank, those pages are still part of the file — fine for archiving, but if you want them gone, first use Delete pages to remove them, then separate the cleaned file.
Scanned the stack in reverse? Use Extract pages and type the range backwards, such as 40-1, to put the pages back in order.
Naming and keeping things organised
Each separated file is named after the original plus the pages it contains — scan_pages-07-08.pdf — so you can always trace a document back to its place in the stack. Rename the files after downloading if you want customer names or dates in them.
If you regularly separate scan batches, name each batch clearly before uploading — the ZIP and every part inside it are named after the original file, so batches never get mixed up.
Frequently asked questions
How do I separate pages in a PDF?
Upload the PDF, choose Split every page, Split every N pages, or Extract pages with "A PDF per range", then click the button and download the separate files.
How do I separate a scanned PDF into multiple documents?
If each document has the same number of pages, use Split every N pages. If the lengths differ, type each document's range (for example 1-3, 4-9, 10-) and choose "A PDF per range".
Can I separate PDF pages without Adobe Acrobat?
Yes. This tool runs in any web browser and doesn't need Acrobat or any other software installed.
What if the last document has fewer pages?
With Split every N pages the last part simply contains the remaining pages. The tool tells you in advance, for example "7 parts, the last with 1 page".
Will separating pages affect the scan quality?
No. The scanned page images are copied unchanged into the new files.
Can I separate pages on a Mac or iPhone?
Yes. The tool works in Safari and every other modern browser, on desktop and on mobile.
